Frequently Asked Questions

Who benefits from MT?

Music therapy can be beneficial for babies, families, children, adults, older adults... anyone can benefit and it is practiced in pre- and perinatal contexts all the way to end-of-life contexts.

How does virtual music therapy work?

Sessions may look different person-to-person and week-to-week, but as with in person sessions; it will likely involve an opening check-in, whether verbal or musical and a similar closing. If the client has instruments there may be some joint playing, although with video lag time it may be a bit out of sync, and that's ok! Still, other sessions may involve more singing, songwriting, song discussion, or receptive experiences focusing on relaxation and. or imagery.

What does perinatal mean?

Perinatal is an umbrella term for the entirety of the childbearing experience from pre-conception (for those planning for pregnancy), all the way to the year postpartum, or following birth.

What does neurodivergent affirming mean?

Neurodivergent is an umbrella term referring to any and all individuals who have brains that differ from what is considered (neuro)typical. This term should not be used as a substitute for autistic, although it does included autistics, folks with ADHD or other sensory-processing types, folks with brain injuries acquired or otherwise, and more. So many therapies historically approach neurodivergent folks with intent to change behavior and to help them "pass" as neurotypical, which belies the fact that all brains are beautiful and should be celebrated rather than changed or even tolerated. As an autistic adhder myself, I seek to create space in a therapy context to celebrate, hold, and cherish folks with all brains, and would love to be a part of someone's journey towards their own self-love and acceptance in this identity.

Do you take insurance?

At this time we accept only self-pay, although this may be subject to change in the future.

I'm not musical so what's in it for me?

Truly, if you have any appreciation or relationship to music or other creative arts, music therapy may be great for you. Some prefer meeting in the music rather than talking directly. Some find it a way to play or be imaginative. Some find it a means for introspection or holding. I believe all humans are inherently musical and regard all music-making as worthy of being made.
