About

Song & Story Creative Therapies

We currently offer music therapy services in office in Chapel Hill, NC, in-home in the surrounding areas, and online nationwide via telehealth. We specialize in teenage mental health and perinatal mental health and work within the neurodiversity paradigm, but are eager and open to all collaborations!

Vision

To contribute to an interconnected network of wellness, perinatal, family, and community resources by being the go-to provider of music therapy for individual, perinatal, and family wellness in the greater Chapel Hill/Durham area and beyond. To bring about connectedness and community for parents, individuals, LGBTQIA+ folks, and families of all backgrounds and identities through music and storytelling.

We believe that music and creative arts take sharing stories and experiences to a deeper level. We believe in creating affirming, holding spaces for people to creatively explore their authentic selves across life journeys. And we will be known for this.

Mission

To provide a personalized, creative approach to mental health and community wellbeing through music therapy, in the greater Triangle-area of North Carolina and through telehealth across the Untied States. Song & Story partners with communities to provide individual and group music therapy services from preconception to end-of-life, working within a neurodiversity paradigm, being trauma mindful, culturally reflexive, and sexuality and gender-affirming.

Music therapy sessions with Song & Story uphold the creativity and inherent musicality of all human beings, regardless of music experience, and center the wellbeing of the individual, family-system, and community.

Core Values

Authenticity
Belonging
Creativity
Wholeheartedness

Let’s cut the BS. We are taught at such a young age to hide certain parts of ourselves, whether explicitly for protection or to “fit in”. At Song & Story, we believe in taking off our masks and bringing forward our true selves. That’s where the healing happens. That’s where connection happens. That’s where belonging and creativity are born.

We believe that healing and moving towards wholeness does not occur in isolation. Central to our practice is the knowledge that connecting through shared experiences and storytelling is what is so transformative about creative therapies, whether one-to-one or in a group. The collaboration and community that comes around shared goals is what brings about belonging.

This one is obvious. As board-certified music therapists, we know that creativity is essential to collaboration. Whether you consider yourself a creative or “artistic” or “musical”  person or not, we believe everyone is inherently creative in their approach to life. We believe in collaborating creatively with individuals and groups to move towards wholeness.

We go about our work with our whole hearts, scars and all. Part of this is mutually coming to the collaboration with loving perception (citation), which means giving ourselves and others graciousness and the benefit of the doubt, rather than coming at it with a “Judging perception” (Lugones, 1987). We believe in being fully present, attuning to the needs of the client, and supporting people and communities with our whole hearts.
