Meet Maryrose

Owner, Board-Certified Music Therapist

Hey there. My name is Maryrose (she/they) and I am a board-certified music therapist in the Durham offering music therapy in office in Chapel Hill, in-home, online, on-sight. I have several years of experience as a music therapist and as a birth and postpartum doula. Much of both careers have been dedicated to honoring families as they transition into a beautiful new chapter and supporting youth and teen mental health, especially autistic and LGBTQIA+ youth and teens.

I have specialized, advanced training in perinatal mental health from Postpartum Support International and am working towards my certification (PMH-C). I recently finished my Masters in Music Therapy with a Mental Health Counseling Endorsement from Slippery Rock University.

When I’m not supporting families, individuals, and communities, I spend my time reading, hiking and birding, spending time with my family and friends, writing poetry and making my own music, and doting on my pet cockatiels, Pico and Weezer.

Approach to Practice
My approach to therapy is a collaborative, creative, community and resource-oriented; integrating narrative, cultural, and feminist practices. I believe in the dance of being completely whole while moving towards wholeness. This dance is rooted in play, in creating space, and in embracing the process. I believe in the power of storytelling and shared narratives as a catalyst for connection, healing, and groundedness. I believe in the duet of examining power, and in personally cultivating resilience practices while collaborating in community to challenge the systems in power.

Music Therapy: What and Why?

Music therapy is the collaborative, reflexive use of music within a therapeutic relationship with a credentialed music therapist (MT-BC) on mutually established areas of focus. This may look like songwriting or song discussion as a means of exploring mental health areas, exploring the voice or instruments as a means for self-soothing or stimulatory behaviors, creating music-based experiences for relaxation, and more.

No prior music experience is needed to benefit from music therapy. We believe that all humans are intrinsically musical across the lifespan and that music is avenue for meaning-making and deep connection. Music therapy is all about how music supports you regardless of background or life experience. Some sessions may be entirely music-making, and others may be more discussion-based.  At Song & Story we are all about your song, your story, and your relationship to wellness.
